Today it’s an important road link from the most densely populated district under the hills to the central part of the city, but in recent years its fate has been rather unclear and it’s certain to undergo reconstruction and at least temporary closure along the break of the station and the intention to run high-speed trains on the lines below .
In fact, a facility was erected there for the first time after an auction was held on November 16, 1929. It was part of the so-called Kalpakchievo shose and it was built with a paved surface in one year. The material was supplied by Pavel Kalpakchiev’s brick factory.
A few decades later, an expansion took place because the facility was insufficient for the traffic at the time. It started on December 1, 1980 during the time of the mayor Hristo Mishev. Officially, the Concrete Bridge - as we know it today - was opened on June 5, 1981. The tricolor flag was cut in front of the media and officials by the secretary of the Central Committee of the BCP Ivan Panev. The event was also attended by Stoyan Koshulev - Chairman of the Executive Committee of the District People's Council. The project was completed by the companies Transstroy and Moststroy. A certain tension was caused by the parallel construction of the Asenovgrad overpass and the chasing of deadlines, but in the end the Concrete Bridge was opened 15 days ahead of schedule under the leadership of Vasil Metodiev, reports Otechestven Glas.
What else was happening in Plovdiv at that time? At the beginning of May, the next International Fair opened. Newspapers were full of various information about the exhibition. Later in the month, other hunting and tourism shows opened, as well as Expo'81 and other shows in May and June. The ads announced an upcoming concert by Lili Ivanova at the Summer Theater.
At the same time, a formal "agitation" was underway for the parliamentary elections for the 8th National Assembly which was to be held on June 7. Otechestven Front won the elections with 99.99% of the votes. Well-known names among the candidates who appear on the pages of the newspaper are Tsvetana Maneva and Nikolay Haitov.
At that time Botev Plovdiv - then Trakia - won the national Cup of the Soviet Army in football after defeating Pirin. By the beginning of June, the championship also ended, in which Trakia managed to finish in third place, beating Spartak 4:3 in its last match, and Georgi Slavkov scored 4 goals, with which he won the Golden Shoe for top scorer in Europe.
