Today, this brunch classic has become much more than just a food trend. It’s a true Instagram sensation, a cultural statement and the subject of international debate. Avocado toast is a food that has been elevated to meme status on social media and a staple of any brunch.
As for the history of this cult dish, in the 1930s the New Yorker and LA Times documented the appearance of avocado on toast. If we dig even further back in time, however, Chileans are known to have been enjoying mashed avocado on Marraqueta bread for breakfast or a light lunch sometime around 1800. There is even evidence that Spanish colonizers brought the bread to Mexico in the 1500s, and avocado was already a staple food there.
As for the version we know today, its authorship is attributed to Bill Granger, an Australian restaurateur and owner of Bill's Restaurant. He claims his 1993 creation, featuring avocado, lime, salt and olive oil on toast, pioneered what has become a brunch classic.
And here are a few places under the hills where we have tried this popular brunch classic and which we recommend:
Dealicious Coffee and Food
Dealicious is so cute and cozy that we could certainly spend all our weekends there. From early in the morning they tempt us with the most fragrant breakfasts, and then they completely enchant us with their brunch offerings and the excellent cappuccino that the baristas prepare for us. Every week they prepare a list with new weekend offers, and their eggs benedict, fluffy pancakes and toasts are not inferior to any menu from the central establishments.
The egg here is perfectly poached, and the in-house bread is tasty and healthy. We know it's hard to decide exactly what to order, but be sure to try the avocado toast on your next visit.
Complimenti
The cute pastry shop in Plovdiv is a real temptation not only for the palate, but also enchants from the first glance at the window. We've told you in detail about all the treats we admit to having a hard time resisting, but today we're also highlighting their avocado toast. Served with a side of cherry tomatoes, it's the perfect pre-dessert choice as it will fill you up and balance out all the sweet food we're sure you'll be ordering afterwards.
QBar
Although most popular for their signature cocktails, this bar in Kapana has also been offering all-day dining for some time. They have both breakfast and brunch offerings, as well as a lunch menu, so if you're in the area, be sure to stop by for a bite to eat. Their avocado toast is also totally worth it.
Tables Kapana
They opened their doors in 2021, but they have a new owner and a slightly different concept sinse relatively recently. Their menu is divided into daytime and evening, and from their brunch offerings you must try the avocado toast.
The Green Library
Their twist on the popular recipe is a little different, as they've enriched the base with Italian burrata with micro-herbs and sunflower seeds, all flavored with an in-house garlic honey dressing.
We also recommend following Multi Culti's Facebook page, where the now-classic slice with poached egg also appears in the weekly offers.
The truth is that until literally 3 years ago, brunch culture in general was not that popular under the hills, but gradually and over the years we now have enough choices for everyone who likes to stay up late and combine breakfast with lunch, at least on weekends.
