At the very foot of Old Plovdiv, at 19 Saborna Street, there is a beautifully restored three-storey house, which on May 21 opened as a gallery with a permanent exhibition of contemporary artists and old masters - born in the 19th and early 20th century.
The building was built at the beginning of the last century and is an architectural monument of ensemble importance. In addition to paintings, there you can see preserved the way of life of the townhouse from the early years of the XX century. The interior reveals the splendor of the old furniture so that you can fully understand the spirit of that time. For almost 3 years the house has been owned by a family of doctors - the Dzhurkovi family.
Dr. Anna Dzhurkova began to build her collectiongradually with a lot of reading and acquaintance with the subject, but also with a lot of emotion. She collects her paintings without setting goals. For her, the works in the Dzhurkovi Gallery are a fine representation of the work of the artists who have painted in Bulgaria since the end of the last century and she’ll be happy if more people get to know it. There are biographies and interesting quotes from and about the artistsin a prominent place among the exhibition, so that the idea of them is more complete and enriching. Initially, she did not intend to show the paintings, but with the purchase of the architectural jewel on Saborna Street, she began to imagine what they would look like in the beautiful building.
The gallery exhibits works by more than 80 classical artists and 30 contemporary ones. It turned out to be quite difficult to show paintings from different periods, styles and techniques. So far, the most acceptable option is to follow the chronology or arrange them according to birth years.
On the first floor are exhibited works by artists born until the end of the 19th century, with a few exceptions. For example, artists such as Asen Belkovski, Nikola Tanev, Hristo Berberov, Josef Oberbauer, Yaroslav Veshin, Gospodin Zhelyazkov, Elisaveta Konsulova-Vazova… Beautiful icons, church projects, etc. are also on display.
On the second floor are the artists born at the beginning of the last century until 1920. These are Iliya Petrov, Vladimir Rilski, Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, Vasil Ivanov, Eliezer Alshekh, Ivan Tabakov, Yordan Geshev… In the basement of the building you can see artists who are our contemporaries. Some of them died early, others worked until recently, and others still have the strength and spirit to create art.
The desire of the owners of the gallery is to differentiate it not only as a place for aesthetic and educational purposes, but also to provide information about the life and work of our talented artists, some of whom are still underappreciated.
